JUNE, 2009 Arbor Day Celebration Parents and children bring your rakes, shovels, pruning tools and enthusiasm and meet us at Clayville School on June 20 from 9 to 11 a.m. The Scituate Conservation Commission will teach us how to properly prune trees and mulch and maintain gardens. Mrs. Andrews, Grade 2 teacher, is the contact person for this event and the PTO is the proud sponsor. Summer Reading Program The PTO is pleased to offer the Summer Reading Program again tis year. You will find the Summer Reading Log in your child(ren)'s back pack this week. (Thank you to Britney Hoppe, a Scituate high School Senior and former Clayville student, for coordinating this program for us. She is earning community service hours for the National Honor Society.) SKILL Chairpersons found! Thank you to the following parent volunteers who will make up the 2009/2010 SKILLs Team: Ramona McCann, Liz Catanzaro, April Forte and Holly Viner. SAFE Grant The advocate group, SAFE, has agreed to fund the BMX Assembly for Field Day. A grant in the amount of $900 will be awarded to the PTO to fund this event. A big thank you to this organization for their support of our organization. Baby Announcement PTO co-President, Juli Dexter, gave birth to a baby girl on June 7. Her name is Eve Lane Dexter. Congratulations Juli! LABEL PROGRAMS Please continue to save your IGA store receipts! Brigado's IGA grocery stores offer the school a 1.0% cash credit on the pre-tax total of all grocery store receipts collect each year. Keep clipping General Mills box tops and sending them into school. This is an important source of income for our PTO. "Box Tops" are located are many products including cereal, snack products, baking mix packages and event health and beauty aid products. IGA receipts and Box Tops saved over the summer will be collected and redeemed in September.
Here is a snapshot of what the Clayville PTO Board and member volunteers have accomplished for the 2008/2009 school year. Fundraiser: Entertainment Books, Chair Windy Burke, Profit: $2,180; Art Festival Bake Sale, Chair, Marcia Tarnowski, Profit: $1,135; Cookie Dough Fundraiser, Chair, April Forte, Profit: $2,070; IGA Receipt Program, Chair, Sue Torres, Profit: $342; Box Tops for Education, Chair, Liz Torrey, Profit: $561; Cell Phone Recycling, Chair, Ramona McCann, Profit, $28; Scholastic Book Fairs, Chair, Julie Pelto-DiMeo, Profit: $1,221; Caring for Clayville Computer Campaign, Chair, Lori DiMatteo, Profit: $13,580 PTO Grants: Volunteers in Scituate Schools Grant of $640 was applied to the Young Authors Program, chaired by Chris Maiorisi. SAFE grant of $900 applied to fund the BMX Cycling Assembly on Field Day. Programs and Equipment: Twenty five new computers were purchased for the School's computer lab at a cost of $14,700 ($13,580 from fundraiser, above). Two years worth of purple mascot folders were purchased for all students at a cost of $490. A membership to RI's Recycling for Education was purchased for teachers' use at a cost of $215. In-school, all-student assemblies totaled $800. Field Trip bus funding totaled $1,950. Field Day t-shirts cost $1,200; Field Day refreshments and paper supplies were $200. Ten new digital cameras were purchased -- one for each classroom; the PTO donated $1,000 toward this purchase. The Back to School Bash cost $320; Camp Out with a Good Book family event was $50, and Open House refreshment and materials totaled $90. Summer Reading Program prizes were $100 and the Young Authors' Program expense to the PTO was only $80 ($640 grant, see above). Family Events and In-house Programming: (The following events are designed to break even; they represent little or no cost to the PTO.) SKILLs after-school programs chaired by Lynne Ciancio; Holiday Workshop chaired by Ramona McCann; Mother/Son Event chaired by Tina Bessette and Wendy DePalo; Father/Son Event chaired by Spaina Cruz; Mother/Daughter Event chaired by Juli Dexter; Ladies Choice Event, chaired by Cindy Maxwell and Cindy Bourgault; Red Ribbon Week sponsored by the PTO; Reading is Fun (formerly RIF) chaired by Julie Pelto-DiMeo; Teacher Appreciation Week headed by Julie King, Lori D'Agostino and Lori DiMatteo; and Bus Driver/Monitor Appreciation Reception hosted by Dina Buscher and Lori DiMatteo. Clayville Website A special thank you to Annette Cook for keeping the PTO Website up to date all year! Your time and talent are appreciated. Father/Son Event Thank you to Spaina Cruz for all her hard work in coordinating an event for the boys and their dads. This was a fun mini-golf event for all. Mother/Daughter Hoe-Down Over 50 Moms and their daughters attended this fun how down event at Wrights Farm. Thank you to Juli Dexter and her group of volunteers for organizing this special day. thank you to Bob Christianson, Professional DJ and Clayville parent, and his daughter for playing music throughout the event and leading the group in some fun dances and activities. Teacher Appreciation Week The PTO mailbox was overflowing with thank you notes from the faculty for the many activities that parents provided during this special week to honor them. Teachers enjoyed a continental breakfast, apple day, flower day, a car wash and special luncheon featuring homemade lasagna, meatballs, quiche, salad, pasta, fruit and many decadent desserts! Thank you to Julie King for organizing the luncheon and to the many parents who cooked. A big thank you also to Lori D'Agostino for organizing the teacher car wash. Car washers included Lori D'Agostino, Jackie Nicholas, Chris Maiorisi, Spaina Curz, Pat Calise, Julie Pelto-DiMeo, Lori dimatteo, windy burke, Ramona McCann, Annette Cook and Kevin Pendergast. Bus Driver/Monitor Appreciation. The bus driver and monitor appreciation reception was held on May 20. Thank you to the many parents who contributed food items to express our gratitude for their important job of keeping our children safe. ATTENTION EVENT CHAIRPERSON A reminder to all PTO Event Chairpersons: Please return the PTO Event Binder that you used when planning your event. Binders should be returned to your PTO board Event Contact Person upon completion of your event. (These binders will prove to be very helpful for subsequent chairpersons.) Please remember to include a copy of all pertinent paperwork generated from your event including contracts, flyers, etc. If possible, include a summary of comments about the event with helpful tips as well. and Thank you so much for making our events possible and for creating a great experience for our Clayville students.
